One of my favorite wildflowers, Bloodroot. These plants were growing next to the trailhead for Jumpinoff Rock on the Blue Ridge Parkway (MP 261) in North Carolina (elevation 3165 ft). Bloodroot is a member of the Poppy family, with red colored sap in the stems that has been used as a dye and in courtship by Native Americans. I also saw Bloodroots sporatically in the Smoky Mountains this same week, but much more profusely later in the week up in Shenandoah National Park on the roadsides of Skyline drive, where Spring was a bit later.
